Former NBLC Champion Added to Magic Coaching Staff

Moncton Magic Head Coach and GM of Player Operations Joe Salerno announced Wednesday the team has hired former NBL Canada Champion Elvin Mims as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

Mims, a native of Century, Florida had a lengthy playing career spanning over the course of 12 years which saw him play professionally in the United States, Iceland, Australia, and Canada. All three of his seasons in the NBL were spent as a member of the London Lightning, where he played an integral role in their 2013 Championship. His familiarity with the league was something that didn't go unnoticed by Salerno in the interview process.

"He is extremely familiar with the league, the players, coaches, and most importantly familiar with what it takes to win in the NBL. Elvin has always been respected by other players and coaches in the league as a high IQ guy, character guy, who handled himself very well on the court" commented Salerno.

Mims, 38, graduated from Southern Mississippi University in 2001 with a B.A. in Sports Administration and Coaching. He helped the Golden Eagles win a Conference USA title his senior season, on his way to being named a 3rdteam All-Conference selection.

Recently Mims has been the co-host on a popular NBL Canada podcast "Between Two Jerseys", as well as spending time as a Skill Development Coach for High School, College and Pro players in the London, Ontario area, something Salerno says will be a big part of his role with the Magic.

"Elvin's main responsibilities will include individual player development, opponent scouting, and film breakdown. Its very easy for current players to respect coaches who have been there and done that as a player, especially in the same league. I think Elvin will be able to do a lot of great things for the guys on our roster and add a lot of great insight to our staff."

Mims is set to join the Magic in October, a few weeks before the teams official training camp kicks off on October 26that Crandall University.
